A routine anchoring operation can become a major safety, environmental and commercial incident when the bridge team fails to look beneath the surface.

There is a moment in every anchoring operation when the Master gives the order:

“Let go.”

The anchor drops.

The cable runs out.

The vessel settles.

The bridge team checks the position.

Everything appears normal.

But what the crew cannot see may be more important than what they can.

Beneath the seabed could be a pipeline, submarine cable, fishing gear, debris or another obstruction. A coral reef may also lie just outside the designated anchorage.

The vessel may be safely anchored at that moment—but what happens if the wind increases, the current changes and the vessel begins to drag?

That is the central message of the American Club's September 2026 Good Catch guidance, “A Snag in Your Plan? Be Careful Where Dropping Anchor.”

 

Anchoring Is Not Just About Finding Good Holding Ground

Traditionally, an anchoring assessment focuses on familiar questions:

  • Is the water deep enough?
  • Is the seabed suitable?
  • Is there sufficient swinging room?
  • What is the wind and current?
  • Are other vessels nearby?

All of these questions remain essential.

But there is another question that deserves equal attention:

What is underneath and around the anchorage?

The seabed can contain pipelines carrying oil, chemicals or gas, electrical cables, telecommunications cables, coral reefs, fishing equipment, debris and lost anchors. These hazards can foul the anchor or, more seriously, be damaged by it.

A fouled anchor may require divers or a crane barge for recovery, creating delay and expense.

But damaging critical underwater infrastructure can create consequences far beyond the recovery of an anchor—including pollution, safety hazards, environmental damage, criminal exposure and substantial claims.

The operational lesson

A safe anchorage is not simply a place where the anchor can hold. It is a place where the vessel can remain safely within its risk envelope.

 

🌊 Buried Does Not Mean Protected

One of the easiest assumptions to make is:

“The cable or pipeline is buried, so our anchor cannot reach it.”

That assumption may be unsafe.

The American Club notes that underwater pipelines and cables may be buried beneath the seabed or laid directly on it, with typical cover ranging from 3 to 25 feet (1 to 7.5 metres). Waves and currents—particularly during severe weather—can remove some of that covering or cause pipelines and cables to shift. An anchor's flukes can penetrate the seabed and potentially reach them.

A common psychological trap is to consider the job finished once the anchor is holding.

It isn't.

Weather can change.

The vessel can swing.

The anchor can lose holding.

The guidance recommends close monitoring of position and weather, vigilant anchor watches and consideration of ballast adjustments in bad weather to reduce freeboard and, as far as practicable, stern trim.

The vessel remains exposed to the anchoring risk until the anchor is weighed and the vessel safely departs.

The Master should create a bridge-team discussion around questions such as:

  • What underwater hazards are shown on ECDIS?
  • What is our intended safety margin?
  • What is the forecast during the expected anchorage period?
  • Where will the vessel swing?
  • Where could she drag?
  • What is the nearest critical hazard?
  • How quickly can the main engine be made available?
  • What will be our first response if dragging is detected?
  • Is there a safer alternative anchorage?

These questions transform anchoring from a routine operation into a risk-informed decision.

 

🧭 Bridge Resource Management: Speak Before the Incident

This is also a Bridge Resource Management lesson.

A good bridge team should not operate on the principle:

“The Master has decided, so we simply execute.”

Professional teamwork means that relevant information is brought forward before the decision becomes irreversible.

A junior officer who notices a submarine cable should feel comfortable saying:

“Captain, there is a potential hazard close to our swinging area. Shall we review the anchorage?”

That single sentence could prevent a major incident.

Good BRM is not about challenging authority. It is about protecting the decision with better information.

The issue should not remain only on the bridge.
