Why a Normal Temperature & Sounding Report Can Still
Demand Professional Judgement
In bulk cargo operations, the most important warning is
not always a red number. Sometimes, it is a small change in the relationship
between two perfectly normal numbers.
A vessel is deep at sea.
The daily Temperature & Sounding Report arrives
ashore.
Hold temperatures are around 17–19°C.
Cargo-hold dew points are approximately 14–16°C.
Cargo hold bilges are reported dry, with soundings at 0
cm.
Hatches are sealed. Fumigation arrangements are documented.
Relevant Letters of Protest have been issued.
At first sight, the report looks routine.
And that is precisely when an experienced maritime
professional should look again.
Because the real question is not:
“Are today's readings normal?”
The better question is:
“What are these readings telling us about the cargo
environment—and where could the trend take us?”
That distinction separates data collection from
operational judgement.
1. A Temperature & Sounding Report Is More Than a
Daily Form
In many shipping operations, temperature and sounding
reports can become routine paperwork.
The vessel measures.
The officer records.
The report is sent.
The shore team files it.
Tomorrow, the process is repeated.
But a properly used Temperature & Sounding Report is
actually an early-warning system.
It can provide information about:
- Cargo-hold
environmental conditions
- Potential
moisture/condensation concerns
- Water
ingress
- Bilge
condition
- Changes
in ambient conditions
- Ballast
condition
- Fuel-oil
temperatures
- Fumigation-control
status
- Emerging
trends
The value is therefore not in the individual number.
The value is in what the number means when compared with
other numbers—and with previous reports.
2. The 2°C Question
Consider a simple example.
Hold temperature:
17°C
Cargo-hold dew point:
15°C
Difference:
2°C
Nothing about those numbers automatically proves that cargo
damage is occurring.
But the 2°C relationship deserves attention.
Why?
Because dew point is relevant to the potential for moisture
in the air to condense when the applicable surface/air temperature reaches the
condensation threshold.
For cargo-care purposes, the professional question becomes:
How is the temperature-to-dew-point relationship
changing?
Suppose yesterday the margin was 4°C.
Today it is 2°C.
The absolute temperature may still look ordinary.
But the margin has narrowed.
That is information.
It is not necessarily an alarm.
It is a reason to watch the trend more carefully.
3. Never Read Temperature in Isolation
A hold temperature of 18°C does not tell the complete story.
The same 18°C can mean something different depending on:
- Cargo-hold
dew point
- Outside-air
temperature
- Outside-air
dew point
- Sea
temperature
- Voyage
location
- Weather
conditions
- Duration
of the prevailing condition
- Cargo
characteristics
This is why experienced officers think in relationships
rather than isolated figures.
For example:
Hold Temperature: 18°C
Hold Dew Point: 14°C
Margin: +4°C
versus:
Hold Temperature: 17°C
Hold Dew Point: 15°C
Margin: +2°C
The second report does not automatically mean there is a
cargo problem.
But it tells the professional:
“The available margin is becoming smaller. Continue
watching.”
4. The Trend Is Often More Valuable Than the Number
This is one of the most transferable lessons in shipboard
operations.
Imagine a report showing:

Looking only at Day 3:
17°C / 15°C
may appear acceptable.
Looking at all three days tells a more useful story.
The margin has progressively narrowed.
That is why:
Trend analysis turns a report into a management tool.
5. What Does a Zero Bilge Sounding Tell Us?
The cargo hold bilge soundings in the report are recorded at
approximately 0 cm.
That is a positive observation.
It indicates that no accumulation of water has been recorded
in the cargo-hold bilges during the reporting period.
For bulk agricultural cargo, water ingress is an important
cargo-care concern.
But again, the professional approach is not:
“Bilges are zero. Finished.”
It is:
“Zero is today's baseline. Will it remain zero?”
A change from:
0 → 0 → 0 → 0
provides a stable trend.
A sudden change:
0 → 0 → 0 → 3 cm
requires attention.
The number itself is only the starting point.
The next question is:
“Why did it change?”
6. When a Sounding Changes, Investigate Before You
Explain
A changed bilge sounding should not immediately be
attributed to one particular cause.
Possible explanations may include:
- Water
ingress
- Condensation
- Residual
water
- Measurement
variation
- Sounding
error
- Operational
activity
- Other
vessel-specific causes
The correct response is therefore not speculation.
It is verification.
A disciplined response is:
Detect → Recheck → Compare → Investigate → Record →
Escalate if necessary.
That is basic but powerful operational discipline.
7. Fumigation Creates Another Operational Control Layer
The report records fumigation arrangements, sealed hatches
and sealed NRVs, together with bilge-line blanking and LOP documentation.
This changes the operational environment.
When cargo is under fumigation restrictions, ventilation and
access to the cargo spaces are not simply routine decisions.
The crew must operate within the applicable fumigation
procedure and safety requirements.
One important principle deserves emphasis:
An exposure expiry date should not automatically be
interpreted as permission to open a cargo hold.
The Master must follow the fumigation company's instructions
and the required safety/gas-monitoring and clearance procedures before any
subsequent opening or ventilation activity.
The date on the report is therefore not merely a date.
It is a planning milestone.
8. Documentation Is Part of Cargo Care
Consider two vessels experiencing exactly the same
operational condition.
Vessel A
The crew followed the required procedure but maintained
limited documentation.
Vessel B
The crew followed the procedure and maintained:
- Temperature
records
- Dew-point
records
- Sounding
records
- Fumigation
documentation
- Sealing
records
- LOPs
- Photographs
where appropriate
- Relevant
communications
If a cargo dispute arises later, the second vessel has a
much clearer contemporaneous factual record.
This is why documentation should not be regarded as an
administrative burden.
It is part of:
Risk management + claims prevention + operational
accountability.
9. The Master: From Recorder to Risk Manager
The Master should not simply ask the officer:
“Have you completed the report?”
A stronger question is:
“What has changed since yesterday?”
That question encourages the bridge and deck team to think.
The Master should look for:
- Significant
temperature movement
- Changing
dew-point relationship
- Unusual
bilge readings
- Changes
in ambient conditions
- Unexpected
ballast changes
- Seal
integrity issues
- Fumigation-control
issues
- Missing
or inconsistent records
The objective is not to create unnecessary alarms.
It is to identify meaningful deviations early.
10. The Chief Officer: The First Line of Cargo-Care
Awareness
For the Chief Officer, the report should be connected to
physical observations.
Numbers should be compared with reality.
If the report says:
Bilges: 0 cm
the officer should have confidence in the sounding
procedure.
If temperatures change, the officer should consider whether
the change is consistent with the surrounding environmental conditions.
If the dew-point relationship changes materially, the trend
should be brought to the Master's attention.
This is where shipboard situational awareness becomes
practical cargo management.
11. The Superintendent: Look for Exceptions
The shore superintendent does not need to treat every number
as a crisis.
Instead, review the report through an exception-based
management lens.
Ask:
Temperature
Is the hold-temperature trend stable?
Dew point
Is the margin changing?
Bilges
Are the cargo holds remaining dry?
Ballast
Are sounding changes consistent with the vessel's
operational condition?
Fumigation
Are controls, seals and documentation being maintained?
Reporting
Does the report clearly communicate anything requiring
attention?
This makes the shore review faster and more effective.
12. The Operator: Connect Cargo Care With Commercial Risk
Cargo-care decisions are operational.
Their consequences can be commercial.
A developing cargo problem can potentially lead to:
Cargo deterioration

Cost, delay and management time
Therefore, good cargo monitoring is also commercial risk
management.
A few minutes spent properly reviewing a Temperature &
Sounding Report can be far more valuable than hours spent reconstructing events
after a claim.
13. A Better Way to Read the Report
Instead of reading the report vertically:
Hold 1: 18°C
Hold 2: 17°C
Hold 3: 18°C
Bilge: 0 cm
Dew point: 15°C
read it horizontally across time.
Ask:
What changed?
Then read it relationally.
Ask:
What is the relationship between hold temperature and dew
point?
Then operationally.
Ask:
Does anything require action?
Finally, commercially:
If this condition develops, could it become relevant to a
future claim?
That four-step thought process transforms routine monitoring
into professional judgement.
14. The Five-Point Cargo Monitoring Framework
For Masters, Chief Officers and shore teams, remember:
1. MEASURE
Take accurate and consistent readings.
2. COMPARE
Compare today's figures with previous reports.
3. INTERPRET
Look at relationships—especially temperature and dew point.
4. INVESTIGATE
Do not ignore unexplained changes.
5. DOCUMENT
Record observations, actions and relevant communications.
In one line:
Measure it. Compare it. Understand it. Act on it. Prove
it.
15. Five Questions Every Daily Report Should Answer
Before closing the day's cargo monitoring cycle, ask:
1. Is the cargo environment stable?
2. Is the temperature/dew-point relationship changing?
3. Are the cargo hold bilges still dry?
4. Are fumigation and sealing controls intact?
5. Is there anything today that tomorrow's team needs to
know?
If the report can answer those five questions clearly, it
becomes significantly more valuable.
16. The Leadership Lesson
The most important lesson is not about dew point.
It is about attention.
Maritime operations are full of numbers:
- Draft
- RPM
- Speed
- Consumption
- Temperature
- Pressure

Professionalism does not mean knowing every number.
It means knowing which relationship matters and when a
small change deserves attention.
A strong maritime leader develops teams that do not simply

They recognise them, understand their significance and

A Temperature & Sounding Report is easy to complete.
The difficult part is interpreting what it is telling
you.
A hold temperature of 17–19°C, a dew point of 14–16°C and
dry bilges provide a reassuring snapshot of the conditions recorded during the
reporting period.
But shipping is not a snapshot.
It is a moving system.
Weather changes.
Sea temperatures change.
Cargo environments change.
Margins change.
And therefore, the professional must continually ask:
“What is changing?”
Because the first sign of a cargo problem may not be a
dramatic alarm.
It may simply be a small narrowing margin that someone
noticed early enough to act.
Don't just read the report. Read the trend.
