At sea, storms are not always wind and waves 🌪️. Sometimes the toughest storm is made of doubt, criticism, and fear inside us.

I want to share one real story from my career — a leadership test I once faced — and how an unexpected story of a basketball player gave me one of the greatest lessons in life and leadership.

This is not just my story. This is for every seafarer, every professional who has been told: “You can’t do it.” 💭

1️⃣ The Toughest Interview of My Life

When I was working at sea, I was nominated for a leadership assessment. It was not training, but a test of leadership qualities.

Two days full of written exams, case studies, group activities, and presentations. Finally, came the interview. And my bad luck — the interviewer I feared the most was assigned to me.

He was a retired military officer. Very strict, known for breaking confidence. He insulted me again and again: “You have done nothing… college kids are better than you… how are you still in this job?” For 45 minutes, he crushed my confidence. I walked out broken.

Two weeks later, I was called again for feedback. To my surprise, the same officer was completely different. Calm, friendly, and open. He spoke with me for one hour and gave me detailed feedback. Out of nine leadership areas, I was weak in two, average in four, and strong in three.

I asked him: “Sir, should I improve my weak points, or should I make my strengths even stronger?”

Instead of answering directly, he told me a story. And that story changed me forever.

2️⃣ The Story of Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues 🏀

That officer told me about Tyrone ‘Muggsy’ Bogues, a famous NBA basketball player.

In basketball, average height is 6’7”. All big and tall players. But Muggsy? He was only 5’3” – the shortest player in NBA history.

Everyone told him: “You cannot play. Forget basketball. Try something else.”
But Muggsy knew his strength — speed, agility, and sharp vision.

He ignored the critics. He worked on his strengths. And guess what? He played 16 years in the NBA, became team MVP, and broke records in steals and assists. Even today, he is remembered as a legend.

Not because of what he lacked. But because of what he focused on.

In our life, people also say:
“You are not tall enough, not rich enough, not experienced enough…”

And many times, we start believing them. We drop our dreams.

But Muggsy teaches us this:
✅ Do not waste energy only on weaknesses.
✅ Focus on your unique strengths.
✅ Ignore the critics.
✅ Believe in your power.

After that interview, I made a choice. I will sharpen my strengths more and more. And that has guided me all my life.
