BAD HABITS – FOR GOOD!

From the bridge to your better self – let's grow together!
1️⃣ Identify Triggers – Know Your
Enemy First
Ever noticed how we reach for our phones during late watch
hours? Or how frustration after a port delay leads to unnecessary smoking? 🤔
Bad habits don’t pop out of nowhere—they have triggers.
It might be:
- ⏰
A specific time of day (post-lunch dip)
- 📍
A place (engine room, mess, or even your cabin)
- 😔
An emotion (stress, boredom, loneliness at sea)
Start by tracking when and why your habit kicks in.
Keep a log for 7 days. You'll start seeing patterns. Recognizing the
"cue" is half the battle won.
👉 Imagine you're steering
your ship and suddenly the compass shows deviation. You wouldn't ignore
it—you'd course-correct. Do the same for your behavior.
Once you know the trigger, you’re in control, not the
habit.
💬 Let me know in the
comments—what’s your biggest trigger?

2️⃣ Replace, Don’t Remove – Swap
the Habit, Don’t Leave a Void
Let me share a story.
A young cadet once told me, “Sir, I tried quitting
late-night scrolling, but I end up feeling restless and do it anyway.” I asked,
“What did you replace it with?” He said, “Nothing.”
💡 That’s the key. Our
brains hate empty spaces. If you remove a habit but don’t fill the
gap, the old habit will sneak right back in.
So instead of:
📱
Mindless scrolling ➡️ Do stretches or read a marine
journal
🚬
Smoking after meals ➡️ Sip warm water and walk the
deck
🍪
Over-snacking ➡️ Munch nuts or hydrate
The brain still gets a reward, but now it's a
healthier one.
Replacing gives you power. You’re not just quitting,
you’re upgrading your routine.
🎯 Action Step: Pick one
habit today and write down its positive replacement. Try it for 3 days
straight.

3️⃣ Use "If-Then" Plans
– Outsmart Your Habit Brain
Onboard or ashore, stress is universal. But here’s
the twist: smart seafarers prepare for stress before it arrives.
🧠 Create an “If-Then”
strategy:
👉 “If I feel bored during
night watch, then I’ll listen to a motivational podcast.”
👉
“If I feel frustrated after cargo delays, then I’ll go for a 10-minute walk on
deck.”
It’s like having a standing order for your mind. When
emotion hits, action follows.
These mental blueprints reduce decision fatigue. You no
longer ask, "What do I do now?"—you know.
I personally use: “If I feel demotivated in the morning,
then I’ll review my vision board and do 10 pushups.”
🎯 Try writing 3 “If-Then”
scripts tailored to your habit.

4️⃣ Commit Publicly – Don’t Let It
Be a Secret Mission
A Chief Engineer once told me: “Sir, when I shared my goal
to quit sugary drinks with the engine crew, I felt more committed.”
🎯 That’s accountability
magic.
When you commit publicly, it feels real. Others
support you. And that little voice inside you says: “I can’t give up now,
they’re watching.”
Whether you post your habit-break goal on your crew
notice board, WhatsApp group, or even just tell a buddy—it works.
You're turning a private struggle into a community
journey. And that’s powerful.
🌟 Tip: Start small. Say,
“I’m doing 10 days without social media after 9PM. Hold me to it.” Let your
network cheer you on.

5️⃣ Track Progress Daily – Small
Wins Lead to Big Change
You know the feeling of ticking off a completed task?
It’s dopamine. It’s progress.
Now imagine you’re trying to break a habit—say, late-night
snacking. Each night you resist and tick it off, you're not just stopping a
habit—you’re building pride.
✅ Create a simple habit
tracker—on paper, app, or a whiteboard in your cabin.
✅
Mark every day you succeed.
✅
Watch the streak grow.
This is called visual motivation. It’s your progress
in front of your eyes. Even if you slip one day, the chart reminds you: “You’ve
come far. Get back on track.”

6️⃣ Reward Small Wins – Celebrate
the Journey
You don’t wait till the ship reaches port to celebrate,
right? Every safe mile counts.
Same with habits.
🎉 Rewarding yourself—even
for one day of success—reinforces the behavior.
Quit smoking for a day? Treat yourself to your favorite
meal.
No Instagram scrolling for 3 days? Watch that movie you love.
💡 The trick is not the
size of the reward, but the emotion attached to it.
Celebrate milestones. Say to yourself, “I did it. I’m
changing.”
It’s this emotion that keeps momentum alive.

yourself after a tough achievement?

7️⃣ Be Patient and Persistent –
It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint
Breaking habits is like a long sea voyage. Calm days,
storms, drift. But if you stay the course—you’ll reach.
You might slip up. You might lose your streak.
So what? 🌊 Every master mariner
knows—it’s about persistence.
The best sailors aren’t those who never made mistakes.
They’re the ones who corrected course, again and again.
So please—be kind to yourself. Breaking bad habits isn’t a
straight line. And that’s okay.
📜 Write this on your
cabin mirror: “Progress, not perfection.”
