🚢 "Rule of Thumb" – A Thumbprint of Patriarchy We Carry Silently
By Dattaram Walvankar | #ShipOpsInsightsWithDattaram
Hey #ShipFam 👨✈️👩✈️
Ever used the term “Rule of Thumb” while solving an
onboard problem or explaining something to your junior officer?
I have.
We all do.
But today, let me take you on a journey behind these simple words...
A journey soaked in centuries-old patriarchy, injustice, and a quiet reminder
of how language shapes mindsets.
🔍 The Dark Origin Behind
a Common Phrase
It was the Middle Ages, a time when the law treated
women not as partners, but as possessions—like cattle, children, or
pets. Under the Common Law of England, a husband literally owned
his wife.
📜 Back then, judges gave
legal sanction to this ‘ownership’ by defining how much force a husband
could use to discipline his wife without it being considered abuse.
In 1782, a judge named Francis Buller ruled
that a man could beat his wife with a stick—as long as it wasn’t thicker
than his thumb! 😳 Yes, his thumb
became the unit of domestic violence regulation.
🧠 From Courtrooms to
Common Speech – How the 'Thumb' Ruled
You might think, "Was it just one judge's
mistake?"
Not at all.
In 1824, a court in Mississippi upheld the same
"rule."
In 1868, another court said it was okay to beat a wife with a stick the
size of a finger—because fingers are thinner than thumbs! 🤦♂️
Even in 1917, legal experts like Byrne Stedman
echoed the same belief in written law.
💬 What started as an
actual method to regulate violence against women turned into a phrase we
now casually use in boardrooms, shipping ops meetings, and WhatsApp messages to
mean a practical rule based on experience.
🚢 What Does This Mean for
Us in Shipping?
As a shipping professional who thrives on discipline,
systems, and decision-making, it hit me hard when I discovered this.
⚓ We use phrases like "rule
of thumb" daily while training cadets, explaining procedures, or
troubleshooting on board.
But understanding the emotional baggage these phrases carry can help us become
more aware leaders—more empathetic, more conscious of the impact of our
words.
Let’s build not just operational excellence, but also emotional
and ethical excellence.
🧭 Let’s Lead with
Awareness, Not Just Experience
Dear #ShipFamily,
This isn’t just about replacing a phrase.
It’s about questioning how language reflects beliefs... and how beliefs
shape cultures—even onboard our ships. 🚢
So next time you say “Rule of Thumb,” pause for a second.
Ask: “Is there a better way to say this?”
🔁 Replace it with:
- "General
guideline"
- "Standard
practice"
- "Experience-based
method"
Let’s grow together—not just professionally, but also as
thoughtful human beings. 🌍💙
